Arrive on-site at 10.00AM

Element Six is the world's leading supplier of high quality superabrasives and industrial diamond materials, including synthetic and natural diamond and the complementary superabrasive cubic boron nitride (cBN).

Diamond and cBN products are mainly used in the manufacture of tools for applications including drilling, sawing, cutting, grinding and polishing of different materials such as ferrous and non-ferrous metals, natural stone and concrete, wood based materials, plastics, glass and ceramics.

Numbers for the site visit are restricted to members only and pre-registration is required.

This presentation covers approaches, use of control bands as targets for air monitoring, use of surrogate materials and historical data to determine the performance of control equipment and direction in the collection of meaningful data.

The effectiveness of LEV systems in controlling exposures.
David O’Malley
Despite being the most widely used of engineering measures, local exhaust ventilation [LEV] systems very often fail to control exposures to hazardous substances adequately. This paper will discuss how to thoroughly examine and test LEV systems on a regular basis. Provide details of a new initiative that will be launched by the HSE UK in collaboration with FOH on new guidance in this field.

The future of Occupational Hygiene.

Demand for occupational hygiene is increasing in many parts of the world creating a shortage of competent personnel. A competency based model, based on international training modules has been developed, with a view to promoting worldwide recognised accreditation.

Exposure assessment to airborne contaminants in the indoor environment of Irish Swine Farms.
Patricia Mc Donnell
Presentation of MSc research involved measuring swine workers exposure to certain respiratory hazards, namely carbon dioxide, ammonia, swine confinement dust, and bacterial endotoxin. Comparisons will be made with recommended health limits for the prevention of ill health in swine workers.

Getting Below 80 – Noise Control to Meet the Regulations.
Colin Doyle
Stricter regulations on workers noise exposure require a systematic approach to noise control to achieve the minimum requirement of less than 85 dB(A) daily exposure, but ideally less than 80 dB(A).  This talk will deal with the Organizational and Technical noise control options.

This presentation deals with the nature of Flammable Toxic and Asphyxiant gases. The different concentrations in the air of both when they become a health and safety issue, and the different techniques available for the precise measurement of both.

SPEAKERS

Marie McCarthy, Senior Inspector has worked as regulatory toxicologist with the Health and Safety Authority for a number of years. She has been actively involved in the negotiation of REACH at EU level and in the development of technical guidance to support REACH through the European Commission’s Interim Strategy.

John P. Farris, CIH, President & CEO, SafeBridge Consultants, Inc. SafeBridge is a professional technical firm of health professionals and other scientific consultants providing EH&S services to pharmaceutical, fine chemical, and biotechnology industries.  John’s expertise includes executive management, industrial hygiene, laboratory safety, control of potent pharmaceutical compounds, environmental protection and environmental remediation. 

David O’Malley FFOH is an Occupational Hygienist for 30 years with experience in industry and consultancy, and currently runs Genesis Environmental Ltd. Originally trained as an Engineer, David has considerable experience in the design of engineering controls, including LEV. David is the Registrar of the FOH.

Steve Bailey works for GlaxoSmithKline as Vice President of Environment, Health and Safety.  He has worldwide responsibility for development of corporate strategy and policy on emerging EHS issues. Steve is President-Elect of the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) and is a past president of the former Institute of Occupational Hygienists (now the Faculty of the BOHS). 

Patricia Mc Donnell is currently studying for a PhD at NUI Galway in the area of Occupational Hygiene. Prior to commencing the PhD, Patricia has worked in occupational hygiene consultancy and research at the Air Quality Technology Centre, also at NUI Galway.
Patricia has an Honours degree in Microbiology and an MSc in Occupational Health and Safety and Ergonomics. 

Colin Doyle is a Physics graduate who converted to a career in acoustics. Based in Denmark with Bruel & Kjaer he provided technical support for advanced noise and vibration applications. Colin has travelled extensively in India providing acoustics and vibration measurement support for university, industrial, military and space research customers. On returning to Ireland he established ANV Technology in 1995 to provide advanced sound and vibration measurement and consultancy services.

John Walsh is MD of Quantum Scientific Ltd.  He is a graduate from London University with a General Degree in Chemistry and Mathematics. QSL specialises in the sales and service of gas detection and other IH equipment for the past 20 years.
